Industry Insights: MedComms

In this week’s round of medical communications insights, we explore some of the latest news in the world of #MedComms.

Delivering medical education that changes practice
In a recent episode of ‘NPTV Unscripted’, Lawrence Sherman (Meducate Global) discussed with Peter Llewellyn (Network Pharma) how to deliver effective continuous medical education (CME). According to Sherman, CME starts with educating educators by clarifying learner needs, designing for engagement and measuring outcomes.

With the 18th European CME Forum on the horizon, Sherman emphasises faculty development, capacity building and communication skills as prerequisites to improve CME performance.

Should patient authors be paid?
In a recent episode of the In Plain Cite podcast series, Rob Matheis hosts Veronica Porkess (UCB Pharma) and Simon Stones (Amica Scientific) to discuss whether patient co-authors should receive financial compensation. Porkess cautioned against re-introducing payment-linked bias and urged clear guidance. Stones highlighted the importance of equity. According to him, healthcare professionals as authors are salaried and gain career credit, whereas many patients take unpaid time. Payment with full disclosure could increase patient participation and reduce selection bias. Both speakers agree on involving patients from study inception, meeting International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) criteria, and ensuring strict disclosures if compensation occurs.
