Rheumatology and autoimmune communication: trusted content from Elion
At Elion Medical Communications, we offer evidence-based medical writing services, including within the field of rheumatology and autoimmune disease.
Our team brings extensive experience in supporting healthcare professionals (HCPs), pharmaceutical companies, and biotech organisations to create clear, scientifically accurate medical content for diverse audiences.
Leading with experience
With over 20 years of experience in medical writing, our team has developed a wide range of materials about rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriasis, and treatments for autoimmune and rheumatic diseases.
We are well-versed in communicating the science behind complex treatment strategies, such as biologics, tumour necrosis factor (TNF), and other emerging targeted therapies, across a variety of content formats.
Communicating progress in autoimmune and rheumatic diseases
From disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) to advanced biologics and small molecules, treatment strategies for rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and ankylosing spondylitis are advancing rapidly.
Healthcare providers and patients face a growing array of options, and each new therapy has unique mechanisms, efficacy profiles, and safety considerations. We help our clients clearly communicate these innovative technologies.

Autoimmune disease therapies we have worked on:
We have deep experience across the following autoimmune disease therapies.
Anti-tumour necrosis factor (TNF)
Anti-TNF medications are a type of biologic treatment. They are common second-line treatments for patients with ankylosing spondylitis when non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are ineffective. Anti-TNF medications reduce inflammation by inhibiting TNF, a pro-inflammatory cytokine.
anti-IL-17A monoclonal antibodies
Monoclonal antibodies such as secukinumab and ixekizumab inhibit IL-17A, an inflammatory cytokine. This helps reduce inflammation in patients with ankylosing spondylitis and psoriasis. Brodalumab, another monoclonal antibody, binds to IL-17A receptors, thereby also preventing cytokine signalling and reducing inflammation.
Janus Kinase (JAK) inhibitors
JAKs are a family of enzymes involved in lymphocyte signalling, and inhibiting them suppresses inflammation in patients with autoimmune diseases. JAK inhibitors are commonly used in patients who cannot tolerate or whose disease is refractory to anti-TNFs.
anti- interleukin-12 (IL-12) and interleukin-23 (IL-23) monoclonal antibodies
Anti-IL-12 and -23 monoclonal antibodies are also a type of biologic treatment used to manage the symptoms of autoimmune diseases, including psoriasis. These antibodies prevent IL-12 and IL-23 from binding to IL-12 receptor subunit β1, which are expressed on immune cells. As such, they shut off an inflammatory signalling pathway and decrease disease severity.
Hydroxychloroquine
Hydroxychloroquine is a DMARD that is used in some patients with rheumatoid arthritis. It works by increasing lysozyme pH in antigen-presenting cells and inhibiting lysosomal enzymes and antigen presentation by major histocompatibility complex-II receptors. It also inhibits toll-like receptor-9, decreasing the production of interferons and cytokines, which decreases inflammation.
Our work in autoimmune disease communications
We support medical teams across the product lifecycle, from early primary and secondary scientific literature to HCP training tools, patient education information and sales communication strategies. Our writers have produced:
- Visual aids explaining immunological pathways in conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and ankylosing spondylitis
- Primary and secondary manuscripts for peer‑reviewed medical journals, journal supplements, systematic reviews, white papers, case reports and clinical summaries
- Abstracts, posters, slide decks and advisory board reports for medical conferences and meetings
- Educational material for HCPs and internal materials to support sales teams and help them engage confidently with HCPs through accurate, evidence‑based content
- Educational brochures, booklets, videos, infographics and other patient‑friendly materials to help patients understand chronic inflammatory conditions, their medical conditions and treatment options.
Our approach sets us apart
Bringing clarity to complex science, Elion combines deep immunology expertise with strategic project management to create impactful rheumatology and autoimmune disease communications.
We work as trusted partners, aligning with your goals and timelines to deliver clear, engaging content from concept to completion.
01
Define
Aligning on goals: we begin with a kick-off call and written brief to clarify objectives, timelines, audience, and deliverables. This ensures a shared understanding and smooth project setup.
02
Create
Developing content: we draft clear and engaging content in collaboration with your team. Messaging is grounded in evidence and tailored for your audience.
03
Refine
Reviewing and improving: we edit, fact check and integrate feedback to ensure accuracy, consistency and alignment with industry standards.
04
Enhance
Optimising outputs: we refine visuals, formatting and structure to maximise impact and engagement across all intended channels.
05
Deliver
Finalising and measuring impact: we prepare final deliverables, ready for submission, presentation or distribution. We can also help define success metrics and gather performance insights to inform future projects.
Expertise in rheumatic and autoimmune disease writing
At Elion, we work closely with healthcare organisations and pharmaceutical companies.
We know the complexity of autoimmune therapies and the pressure to deliver quickly. That’s where we come in! Our writers bring expertise in biologics, emerging treatments and more to your communications.

We write the following material, all grounded in the latest scientific evidence:
- primary and secondary manuscripts for peer-reviewed medical journals
- abstracts, posters, and slide decks for presentation at medical conferences or meetings
- advisory board reports
- educational materials for HCPs
- educational materials for patients: brochures, booklets, or videos to help patients understand their medical conditions and treatment options
- journal supplements
- clinical summaries
- clinical infographics
- case reports
- systematic reviews
- white papers.
We work with pharmaceutical and biotech companies, medical communications agencies, and clinical research teams involved in autoimmune disease. Our clients rely on us to deliver accurate and clear content that meets specific journal requirements, supports product education, and educates the reader.
Our medical writers have thorough expertise in immunology and chronic inflammatory disease, with experience developing content on biologics (TNF, IL-17, and IL-23 inhibitors) and JAK inhibitors for rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and psoriasis. We stay up to date with emerging therapies and global clinical guidance.
All content is thoroughly reviewed against source data, scientific literature, and regulatory standards. We apply a consistent quality control process to every project and work to your specific writing style requirements.
We combine scientific expertise with project management to offer a collaborative approach and manage your project from the ground up. Our global presence enables time zone continuity, meaning projects progress even outside your local business hours. This is particularly valuable for tight deadlines or updates in response to new data. Learn more in our blog post on the benefits of working with a medical communications micro-agency.
We use internal review processes and cross-check all materials against source data, ensuring that every document maintains consistency with your messaging.
Once we understand your scope and requirements, we can allocate appropriate team members and begin quickly. Our goal is to integrate smoothly into your workflow and keep your timelines on track.
