Elion in respiratory therapy: Communicating innovation

At Elion Medical Communications, one of our major areas of expertise is providing expert medical writing services to respiratory therapy companies. We have long-standing relationships with device manufacturers who specialise in developing and promoting non-invasive ventilation devices.

Leading with experience

Drawing on more than 20 years of experience in medical communications within respiratory care, our team has crafted a wide range of content across various device categories, including:

  • vibrating mesh nebulisers
  • continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP) systems
  • oxygen therapy devices
  • respiratory facemasks.

We understand the science behind these technologies and we know how to communicate their benefits clearly to clinicians, payers and patients.

Respiratory care communications in step with emerging innovations

Respiratory diseases represent a significant health burden globally: over 260 million asthma cases were recorded in 2019, and COPD is the fourth leading cause of death worldwide, being responsible for approximately 3.5 million deaths in 2021.

This means respiratory care is a common requirement across multiple settings, including home use, emergency departments and critical care units. As respiratory therapy devices evolve rapidly to improve the quality of life of patients with conditions such as asthma, COPD, sleep apnoea and acute respiratory distress, it’s important that clinical data and usage guidance, along with device features and benefits, are communicated clearly, in an evidence-based manner. All this aids patient education which translates to treatment adherence and the potential for better health outcomes.

We support respiratory device manufacturers with:

  • strategic positioning and value proposition development
  • effective promotional messaging focused on device features, benefits and performance
  • omnichannel product launch marketing campaigns
  • patient education resources
  • literature reviews, white papers and clinical summaries.

Respiratory therapy areas where we have made an impact

Elion Medical Communications Inhaler

Aerosol drug delivery (inhalers)

Metered-dose inhalers, dry powder inhalers and soft mist inhalers are common types of inhalation devices used to deliver medication directly to the lungs for conditions such as asthma and COPD. The canister is pushed down to release a pre-measured dose of medication, and a propellant (usually hydrofluoroalkane) helps deliver the drug as a fine mist.

Elion Medical Communications Nebuliser

Aerosol drug delivery (nebulisers)

Nebulisers include jet, ultrasonic and vibrating mesh devices. They deliver inhaled medication into the lungs and are often used when inhalers are not appropriate. Jet nebulisers use compressed air (or oxygen) to create a high-velocity jet that turns liquid medication into a mist. Ultrasonic nebulisers use high-frequency vibrations from a piezoelectric crystal to produce an aerosol from liquid medication. Mesh nebulisers are portable, efficient and virtually silent and also produce an aerosol from a liquid medication.

Elion Medical Communications Pap

Positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy

These include CPAP, automatic positive airway pressure and BiPAP devices. Used in both home and clinical environments, PAP systems are a cornerstone of therapy for obstructive sleep apnoea and respiratory failure.

Elion Medical Communications Bpap

Respiratory face- and nasal masks

Masks must be safe, comfortable and effective for non-invasive ventilation and aerosol delivery.

Elion Medical Communications Oxygen Therapy

Oxygen therapy devices

These include high-flow nasal cannula systems and portable oxygen concentrators.

Our case studies in respiratory therapy devices

At Elion, our expertise in respiratory therapy devices has been applied to the real challenges faced by our clients. Each project brings its own unique clinical and strategic needs.

With  the recent implementation of the Medical Device Regulation (MDR) framework in the European Union, Elion supported the marketing, medical affairs and regulatory teams of a long-standing client to develop MDR-compliant clinical core claims. Read more about the case study here.
