GLP-1 agonists: potential therapies in ovarian cancer
A recent study from Gynecologic Oncology highlighted that GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonists improved overall survival in women with ovarian cancer, the deadliest gynaecologic cancer. GLP-1 agonists, such as semaglutide, are medications primarily used to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity. The study found a 55% reduction in mortality risk amongst patients who used these agents alongside standard treatment. GLP‑1 agonists may work against cancer cells by promoting tumour cell apoptosis and reducing tumour cell proliferation. Researchers said that the safe and tolerable profile of these drugs can only add to their potential to become valuable treatment options for ovarian cancer.
Humana announces ‘Cognitive Games’ for elderly adults
Humana, a health services company, has recently announced the ‘Humana Cognitive Games’, a virtual platform designed to support brain health in the elderly. The platform promises to help the elderly maintain their independence in daily activities. Cognitive Games offers puzzles, exercises and lifestyle guides aiming to stimulate mental agility in people aged 50 and older. ‘Trying new things – whether it’s a hobby, an instrument or a puzzle – stimulates the brain and helps protect against mental decline,’ said Isabel Souffront, MD and chief medical officer for Conviva Senior Primary Care in Broward County, Florida, in the press release.
July is Dry Eye Awareness Month
July marks Dry Eye Awareness Month, drawing attention to dry eye disease, a condition that affects approximately 16 million adults in the US and millions more globally. Dry eye disease occurs when tears fail to lubricate the eyes adequately. As a result, symptoms such as burning, stinging and blurred vision can appear. The increasing prevalence of the disease has been linked to screen time and environmental factors. Current treatment options include artificial tears and prescription medications, while new therapies are in trial phases.
