Pfizer and Flagship Pioneering join forces for AI-driven drug discovery

The pharmaceutical giant Pfizer has partnered with Flagship Pioneering to create a new platform for AI-driven drug development. This collaboration will focus on using generative artificial intelligence (genAI) to optimise the selection of drug candidates and reduce drug discovery timelines. In a press release, Paul Biondi, Flagship Pioneering’s president of pioneering medicines and managing partner, emphasised the importance that this partnership can have in developing safe, effective and personalised treatments for autoimmune diseases.

Addressing cardiologist shortages with AI-assisted heart scans 

GE HealthCare is using AI to address the shortage of cardiologists and echocardiography services in the US. GE HealthCare’s Vscan Air SL handheld device uses AI-guided point-of-care ultrasound to help clinicians perform cardiac assessments. The device can be especially helpful in primary care or rural settings where specialist access is limited. In trials, clinicians using the handheld device were able to make faster decisions and identify urgent cardiac issues without waiting for input from cardiologists. This technology may also have potential applications in other areas of medical imaging and diagnostics.

Zoom announces AI-powered mobile platform for healthcare professionals

Zoom has launched a new AI-driven mobile platform designed specifically for frontline healthcare workers. This platform uses an agentic AI model to autonomously mediate communications, reduce administrative procedures and improve decision-making in real-time. The AI assistant is designed to learn and adapt to team workflows, helping healthcare staff access records quickly and focus on patient care. This platform could be particularly useful in time-sensitive settings such as emergency services.
