In this week’s insights, we discuss recent news regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in healthcare.
Whakarongorau Aotearoa joins Microsoft New Zealand cloud
Whakarongorau Aotearoa (New Zealand Telehealth Services) is transferring to Microsoft’s new hyperscale cloud host in New Zealand by the end of the year. This transfer will integrate Whakarongorau’s telehealth system into a single platform, which promises to increase operational efficiency by implementing artificial intelligence (AI) tools. ‘This agreement with Microsoft will allow us to deliver secure, seamless services across digital and AI platforms, ensuring we meet New Zealanders’ needs wherever they are,’ said Mike Mulvaney, Chief Information Officer (CIO) of Whakarongorau.
The FDA releases a new perspective on regulating AI in healthcare
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released its stance on regulating artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. The FDA is working to promote AI best practices globally through the International Medical Device Regulators Forum and accommodate AI in clinical trials through the International Council for Harmonisation. The published perspective highlights the need for flexible mechanisms, transparency and proficiency in regulating AI. It also emphasises life cycle management and post-market performance monitoring, especially for large language models (LLMs) and their uses.
AI-based tools could be the future of pulmonary embolism diagnosis
Data from a recent study demonstrate the potential that artificial intelligence (AI) can have in diagnosing and managing pulmonary embolism (PE). Dr. Zeina Morcos, co-author of the study, presented her findings at the #CHEST 2024 annual meeting in Boston. The study compared the abilities of two AI models, ChatGPT-3.5 and DoximityGPT, in diagnosing PE. It found that both models could successfully reach conclusions that aligned with clinicians’ assessments and diagnoses of PE made using CT angiography (CTA). DoximityGPT, in particular, showed high diagnostic accuracy, matching clinical diagnoses in 7 out of 10 cases.
