In this week’s insights post, we discuss some of the latest advancements in the applications of artificial intelligence in healthcare.
FDA launches AI tool to improve scientific review
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has launched Elsa, an AI assistant designed to help staff complete scientific reviews faster and more efficiently. According to the FDA, Elsa can summarise data, compare drug labels and even generate database code in just a few minutes. After a successful pilot earlier this year, the tool is now being used across all FDA centres. Elsa may potentially mark an important step toward using AI to reduce administrative workload and speed up access to new treatments.
AI achieves physician-level insulin dosing for patients with type 2 diabetes
A study recently published in JAMA Network Open has found that an AI model can match physician accuracy in recommending insulin doses for patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Researchers trained the model with clinical data and personalised dosing regimens. The model’s recommendations demonstrated a strong alignment with recommendations from endocrinologists. This tool could potentially help reduce the burden on healthcare providers by alleviating the process of glycaemic control for patients. According to the authors, the model may be particularly beneficial in primary care or underserved areas where specialist diabetes care is limited.
ChatGPT is able to provide accurate answers on colorectal cancer screening
A recent study from Endoscopy International Open of ChatGPT’s responses to patient questions about colorectal cancer (CRC) screening shows that the large language model delivers mostly accurate, appropriate and comprehensible answers. In the study, gastroenterologists assessing the responses found that ChatGPT’s information aligned with current clinical guidelines in most cases. They highlighted, however, that ChatGPT doesn’t substitute medical advice but may serve as a useful educational tool for patients seeking information or clarification on CRC screening options.
