The Impact of Generative AI on Writing and Reviewing Documents for Health Authorities like the FDA
Author Gregory Cuppan has emphasised how generative AI has the potential to revolutionise regulatory writing by improving efficiency, accuracy, and compliance for health authorities like the FDA and EMA. The document review process is not only time consuming but also prone to human error. There are many challenges associated with this, such as data privacy and bias detection, which must be carefully managed. It is clear that integrating generative AI into the regulatory documentation process is still in its early stages and is dependent on continued technological advancement and collaboration among developers, regulatory professionals, and health authorities.
Pfizer’s Three Principles of Responsibility for Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare
Pfizer has developed a set of policies and controls allowing the company to use AI ethically and responsibly. Principles guiding Pfizer’s AI use include empowering humans while guarding against bias, ensuring privacy and transparency in data use, and taking ownership of their AI systems. These principles highlight how Pfizer looks to take accountability for its AI use while ensuring that it meets ethical, legal and regulatory standards.
Can AI Enhance Research Integrity?
This was the question posed by the Publication Plan, prompted by research from Ghosh and Calamur, which emphasised the importance of peer review in detecting issues such as plagiarism and questionable research practices. The authors explored how AI-driven tools could revolutionise peer review processes, from screening to reviewer selection and evaluation, but acknowledged the need to mitigate bias and ensure transparency. They further suggest that AI could result in “improvements to the overall quality and objectivity of the peer review process.” In response to the question posed by The Publication Plan, “What do you think – should AI be used to improve the peer review process?” 68.75% of respondents favoured its use, while 12.5% were opposed to it.
